In 1850, Reverend Eliakim Phelps's household reported displaced furniture, thrown objects and unexplained knocking. New England Legends traces the publicity to contemporary newspaper accounts, including the Hartford Courant. The family said the disturbances ceased after a winter away; the mansion was demolished in 1974.
